What is Rose Tinted Roads, and how is it different from a route planner?

Accepted Answer

A route planner answers "how do I get from A to B?". Rose Tinted Roads answers "what kind of ride do I want today?". Every road here is chosen for the experience of riding it — the light, the sweep, the silence, the tea stop halfway round — and tagged with the moods it suits. You pick a mood and a rough length, and we hand you rides worth remembering rather than the quickest line on a map.

Do I need an account?

Accepted Answer

No. You can browse Discover, run a Find a ride search, open any ride and send it to your maps app without signing in. An account only becomes useful when you want to keep a ride journal, submit a road of your own, or have your saved rides follow you between devices.

Question 3

How do I sign in — and what if the email doesn't arrive?

Accepted Answer

You can sign in with an email address and password, or with your Google account in one tap. If a confirmation email hasn't appeared within a couple of minutes, check your spam or promotions folder and search for the sender address. Still nothing? Try signing up again with the same address — it's safe to repeat — or get in touch and we'll sort it out.

Question 4

Can I change my rider preferences or redo the onboarding questions?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Everything you answered at the start lives on your Profile — your name, home location, bike, preferred ride length, favourite scenery and road type. Change any of it there and your recommendations update straight away. If you'd rather start clean, Profile has a "Replay onboarding" button that walks you back through the questions.

How do I use this on my phone like an app?

Accepted Answer

It's built mobile-first, so it works in any phone browser. To get an app-style icon: on iPhone open the site in Safari, tap Share, then "Add to Home Screen". On Android open it in Chrome, tap the three-dot menu, then "Add to Home screen". It then opens full-screen with no browser chrome, which is much easier to read with gloves on at a layby.

How does the mood-based search work?

Instead of asking where you're going, Find a ride asks what you want from the ride — a clear head, a blast, big views, somewhere to think, a proper day out. We match that against how each road actually feels to ride, then narrow by how long you've got and the kind of tarmac you enjoy. You get a short, honest shortlist rather than a hundred near-identical loops.

What is the Rose Tinted Score?

It's a single number that sums up how memorable a road is to ride — not how fast or how technical it is. It blends the quality of the views, the flow and rhythm of the road, its surface and condition, how quiet it usually is, and what's along the way worth stopping for. Curated rides carry our score; rider-submitted roads carry the score the rider gave, until we've ridden it ourselves.

Can I filter by how long I've got, or the kind of road?

Yes — every search lets you set a rough duration (a quick blast through to a full day), the scenery you're after, and the road type from tight lanes to flowing A-roads. Leave a filter untouched and we simply won't weight it, so you'll see a wider spread.

Question 9

Discover or Find a ride — which should I use?

Accepted Answer

Use Find a ride when you know roughly what you want today and you want a shortlist in under a minute. Use Discover when you're browsing for its own sake — it's the whole collection, grouped by mood and character, good for building a wish list for the season.

Question 10

Why are some rides nowhere near me?

Accepted Answer

We'd rather show you 100 unforgettable roads across the UK than pad the list with whatever happens to be nearby. Some of what you see is a weekend away rather than a Tuesday evening. Set your home location on your Profile and we'll favour rides within reach. And when you do travel, the Open in maps sheet can chain your real starting point to the beginning of the ride, so getting there is part of the plan.

Question 11

How do I send a ride to Google Maps, Apple Maps or Waze?

Accepted Answer

Open the ride and tap "Open in maps". Choose your app and it opens with the route loaded, ready to navigate. We don't navigate for you — no turn-by-turn, no voice in your ear. You already have an app you trust for that, so we hand the ride over to it.

Question 12

What's the difference between "Get me to the start" and "The whole journey"?

Accepted Answer

"Get me to the start" gives you directions from where you are to the beginning of the ride — useful when the good stuff is a couple of hours away and you just want to arrive. "The whole journey" stitches the two together: your starting point, then the ride itself with its shape preserved through a series of waypoints, then the finish. Google Maps and Apple Maps can both take this. Waze only accepts a single destination, so it always gets the finish point only.

Can I download the GPX for my satnav?

Accepted Answer

Yes — the Open in maps sheet has a "Download GPX" option on any ride with a mapped route. That's the lossless version: every bend, exactly as recorded. Load it into a Garmin, a TomTom Rider, Calimoto, MyRoute-app or anything else that reads GPX, and nothing gets straightened out on the way.

Why doesn't my maps app follow the exact route?

Accepted Answer

Consumer maps apps take a limited number of stops in a shared link, so we sample the route down to a handful of well-spaced waypoints. That keeps the character of the ride, but a maps app may still choose a slightly different line between two points — usually a faster one. If you want the route bend for bend, download the GPX instead.

Question 15

What are the stops and what3words points on a ride?

Accepted Answer

Stops are the reasons to switch the engine off — a viewpoint, a café worth the detour, a bridge, a stretch of coast. Where a stop isn't at a postal address, we give a what3words reference so you can find the exact spot rather than a vague pin in a village.

Question 16

What's the difference between saving a ride and marking it completed?

Accepted Answer

Saving is a wish list — roads you fancy, waiting for the right weather. They live on your Saved page. Marking a ride completed moves it into your history, so over a season you can see where you've actually been rather than where you meant to go.

Question 17

How do I log a ride with notes?

Accepted Answer

Open the ride you've done and use the journal form on the page. You can set the date you rode it, how the day felt, and write as much or as little as you like. It's deliberately unstructured — no pace, no averages, no leaderboard. Some entries are three words about the weather; some are a paragraph about why you needed the ride.

Can I edit or delete a journal entry?

Yes. Every entry on your History page can be edited or removed at any time. Deleting is immediate and permanent.

Question 19

Does anyone else see my ride journal?

Accepted Answer

No. Your journal is yours alone — there are no followers, no feeds and no public profile. Nothing you write is shown to other riders, and we don't publish it anywhere. If you'd like a copy of everything we hold, or you'd like it all gone, both are one tap away on your Profile.

Question 20

How do I suggest a road?

Accepted Answer

Use the Recommend a road form. Tell us where it starts and finishes, roughly how long it takes, and — most importantly — why it's worth riding. The best suggestions read like you're telling a mate about it: what the road does, what you see, where to stop, and the time of day or year it's at its best.

Question 21

What photos should I add?

Accepted Answer

Two or three is plenty. A wide shot that shows the character of the road beats a close-up of your bike at a viewpoint we can't identify. Photos are resized in your browser before uploading, so you don't need to shrink them first. Please only send photos you took yourself, and don't include number plates, faces or anything you wouldn't want published.

How do I choose mood tags and a rider score?

Pick the moods that honestly describe the ride rather than every tag that might apply — two or three well-chosen ones help us far more than eight. The rider score is your own view of how memorable it is. A high score helps a road get looked at sooner, but it doesn't guarantee publication; we ride it or verify it before it goes live.

What happens after I submit, and how long does it take?

Nothing publishes automatically. Every suggestion lands in a review queue, and a curator reads it, checks the route and either publishes it, comes back for more detail, or sets it aside. That can take a little while — we're deliberately slow about this. A road might not make it if it's already covered, if it's not really about the experience of riding, or if it's somewhere we'd rather not send traffic.

Can I send a GPX of the route with my suggestion?

Accepted Answer

Not through the public form yet — for now, describe the route with road numbers and the towns it passes through, and add what3words references for anything hard to describe. If you have a GPX you're happy to share, mention it in your description and get in touch; a curator can attach it when the ride is built.
